With the change in our NASW Code of Ethics, we are hosting a virtual 3 hour ethics PD to discuss updates and Ethical SSW practice

The NASW Code of Ethics is a living document which provides guidance and directives for ethical practice in the current society. In 2020, as social workers took on the role of first responder in the COVID-19 pandemic as well as in the racial and social justice crisis. Against this backdrop, NASW recognized the need to update the Code of Ethics to more explicitly address both Self Care and Cultural Competency. Join us as we discuss these changes and specifically address Ethical School Social Work Practice.

COVID-19 Update from SSWAAZ President

During this time of uncertainty, we wanted to provide you with information and resources on what you need to know re: COVID-19 and school closures.  As of yesterday, Governor Ducey sent out information on school closures and what to expect.  As you may be aware, school closures have extended until April 10th.  In a nutshell, this is what to expect per the governor’s office (view full article here:  3/20/20 Open Letter- Gov)

  • Children under the age of 18 will be provided meals (visit azed.gov for a list of meal sites).
  • Governor Ducey’s office is teaming up with other community partners and non-profits to make childcare available for those who need it.
  • Legislators have passed legislation to waive requirements related to educational assessments and ensure that teacher and staff pay continues.
  • The governor’s office continues to work with education leaders (local, state, and federal level) to provided guidance to schools re: high school graduation.

We will continue to send out information as we get it either via email and/or Facebook page, so please continue to check your email and our Facebook page (@SSWAAZ).

During this time of social distancing, stress, and uncertainty, please do not forget your own well-being by practicing self-care and support seeking if you need it (even if that means texting or video conferencing a friend or loved one).  In the meantime, here is an additional resource on coping with stress in the face of COVD-19 from the CDC:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/managing-stress-anxiety.html

Be well and stay safe,

Lauri Pagano, LMSW
